“For the love of money is a root of all kinds of evil. Some people, eager for money, have wandered from the faith and pierced themselves with many griefs.” I Timothy 6: 10 (NIV)
I am fascinated by the TV show, American Greed. The stories center around criminals who abscond with other people’s money. Sometimes they escape, and sometimes they get caught. None too often the criminals are stopped because one brave person blows the whistle on the Ponzi scheme or cheating operation. It’s a fascinating human drama with the central theme being that the love of money turns good (often religious) people into bad people, and churns up a multitude of sins.
Lest I feel pompous and superior because I generally don’t get drawn into this particular sin, God has pointed out that to be MEAN (Old English) with money is a sin, too. I am far more likely to be MEAN with it, in the name of thriftiness. That can be greedy, too.
The more you study it, the more complicated this whole thing with money gets! Maybe that’s why Jesus told us to “consider the lilies..”
